The Department of English at Government Degree College, Rapur has undertaken various best practices to enhance the English language proficiency of first-year degree students. Given that a majority of students come from rural backgrounds with limited English exposure, the implementation of student-centric, skill-based learning has been prioritized. This report highlights the best practices adopted and their impact on students’ linguistic, academic, and professional growth.
2. Objectives of the Best Practices
• To improve the communication skills of students with a focus on Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (LSRW).
• To create a student-friendly and interactive learning environment.
• To integrate technology and real-world applications in English learning.
• To enhance employability skills by focusing on spoken English, business communication, and soft skills.
• To foster critical thinking, creativity, and independent learning.
3. Best Practices Implemented
A. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)
• Classroom activities included group discussions, role-plays, storytelling, and debates to promote active learning.
• Students participated in mock interviews and extempore speaking to build confidence.
B. Reading and Writing Enhancement
• Extensive Reading Program: Students were encouraged to read newspapers, short stories, and articles, followed by review writing.
• Book Review Sessions: Students presented summaries and critiques of books they read.
• Essay Writing and Creative Writing Workshops: Students engaged in poetry, blogs, and short story writing to express their ideas.
